Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This is the seventh edition of a comprehensive medical-surgical textbook. An interactive CD-ROM with critical thinking case studies, review questions, vocabulary review with sound pronunciations and other exercises accompanies the book. The previous edition was published in 1999.
Purpose: The vision for this seventh edition of Medical-Surgical Nursing is of a text that presents the student with clear, comprehensive knowledge essential to practice. It uses a framework of supporting theory drawn from the health, natural, social and behavioral sciences. . .further, the text places, knowledge within the context of current practice issues, models, and settings, "according to the editors. This is a worthwhile mission that is accomplished with this book."
Audience: The book is designed for students. As a comprehensive medical-surgical nursing textbook, hopefully it would be used for more than one semester. There are some ancillaries available with the instructor in mind. CD-ROM or online instructors may obtain chapter outlines, objectives, overviews, practice applications and critical thinking questions. An updated 1,500-question test bank and a collection of over 200 full-color images are available.
Features: This book is well known and well respected. It features a solid presentation of pathophysiology and medical and nursing management and a strong emphasis on patient and family teaching, with a focus on collaborative management. There is a consistent application of the 5-step nursing process throughout. Each chapter lists chapter objectives, although only a few are from the higher cognitive levels, and critical thinking questions. The illustrations are the only shortcoming that stood out to me. The use of color could be improved. There are few color photos and the color that is used looks washed out. The section on the musculoskeletal system is particularly well written and illustrated. The illustrations are the only shortcoming that stood out — the use of color could be improved. There are few color photos and the color that is used looks washed out. The section on the musculoskeletal system is particularly well written and illustrated.
Assessment: As with the previous editions, this book is very good. The new chapter on complementary and alternative therapies is excellent. The Mosby's "Get Smart" online learning package will be attractive to many students. There is an impressive list of authors, contributors, and reviewers, and some are in actual hands-on practice: Thank you! My only suggestions: get a more professional cover, improve the use of color in the illustrations, and refine the system of icons.
Penny Wolfe Moore
This sixth edition is a comprehensive textbook of 2388 pages with multiple color illustrations. It is an improvement over the fifth edition in both visual stimulation and currency of content. Recent changes in healthcare are reflected in this medical/surgical textbook, such as an emphasis on geriatrics and the delivery of healthcare to patients with medical/surgical problems regardless of the setting. Concepts related to leadership and management are included. Nursing students, their teachers, and practitioners will find this text useful. Each of these groups is targeted with special ancillaries including an instructor's manual, study guide, test bank CD-ROM, Internet information network, image collection CD-ROM, and video series. The text is divided into two parts. Part one describes elements that apply to many patients regardless of the medical diagnosis (emphasis on nursing diagnosis), part two concentrates on a body systems approach. Each chapter includes objectives, critical thinking questions, and a summary. New features include full color illustrations, interactive CD-ROM, patient teaching boxes, guidelines for care boxes, common medication tables, and clinical manifestation and risk factor boxes. Care plans, clinical pathways, and research are included. Visual stimulation and use of illustrations compare favorably with Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing, 8th Edition, but the available ancillaries in this text are superior. This is a high quality student text and would be an asset for any library frequented by nurses or nursing students. Mosby's Electronic Resource Links and Information Network (MERLIN) is excellent. Eachtextbook contains a password for access. Click on the desired chapter name and links to other high quality sites become available.
