Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
This would be a fascinating start for a student is doing a report on modern medicine or technology. Technology is used for diagnosis from a stethoscope to monoclonal antibodies. Technologies such as insulin pumps, inhalers, and injections can treat medical problems. Surgery has been greatly improved starting with anesthesia so the patient does not feel the pain. Recent technological advances of laparoscopic surgeries help the patient recover faster and easier because of smaller cuts are made. Some surgeries are now performed by robots. The human surgeons who control them are sometimes oceans away. Technologies allow organs of the body to continue to work with artificial valves, pace makers, defibrillators, and artificial parts. One girl had a heart transplant when she was a toddler, but her original heart was left in place. Amazingly, her own heart healed, the transplant was removed, and she is doing fine. Dialysis machines have functioned as substitute kidneys for people suffering from kidney failings. Throughout the book are interesting facts and medical tidbits. Included are the technologies that are just about in our future. This is a great readable resource for students. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell
