Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: LouAnn Schraffenberger, MBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P(Advocate Health Care)
Description: This is the third edition of a comprehensive textbook-workbook for teaching medical terminology. The book teaches the basic principles of medical word building following the criteria of a competency-based curriculum. The book is designed as a classroom teaching text.
Purpose: The objectives are twofold. First, it provides basic principles of medical word building. Second, it presents material at a level that is easily understood by the average student. No previous knowledge of anatomy, physiology, or pathology is necessary.
Audience: The primary audience is healthcare students or anyone interested in learning medical terminology. This is the third edition completed by the authors, who are professors of health and human services at a midwest community/technical college.
Features: The first five chapters explain the method by which basic elements form medical words: suffixes and prefixes and anatomical, physiological, and pathological terms. The next 11 chapters are organized according to body systems and may be taught in any sequence. Each chapter includes anatomy and physiology; combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes; pathology; diagnostic, symptomatic, and related terms; special procedures, such as diagnostic imaging, endoscopic, clinical, surgical and laboratory; pharmacology terms; abbreviations; a case study; and worksheets. The book has seven appendixes with an answer key and other useful reference materials .
Assessment: This is a very comprehensive medical terminology textbook-workbook. It probably would best be used in a classroom but would also serve as an excellent reference for a healthcare professional. I agree with the authors that Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary would be a good companion reference. The book also has an accompanying Instructor's Guide and DOS-based test generating program.
