Overview

Quick, streamlined, and easy-to-use, Medical Terminology: A Short Course shows how to decipher the meanings of medical terms by breaking them down into smaller word parts. Chabner's proven method introduces words in the context of human anatomy, physiology and pathology so concepts are easier to grasp, while instilling the basics of suffixes, prefixes, and root words essential to developing a working medical vocabulary. Extensive hands-on practice, repetition, and case studies encourage students to learn by doing - writing terms, labeling diagrams, and completing exercises and review sheets. The book's selective content provides just the right amount of material for short medical terminology courses.
• Self-teaching text/workbook format reinforces learning and builds confidence with pronunciation tests, diagram-labeling exercises, and review sheets.
• Full-color drawings and photographs bring anatomy and pathophysiology terms to life.
• Simple, clear, non-technical explanations of terms are easy to understand and require no previous background in medicine or science.
• Case studies and vignettes use medical terms to show real-life applications of medical terms.
• Appendices provide valuable reference information at the most basic level on supplemental topics such as anatomy of the body systems, drug classes, diagnostic tests and procedures, and abbreviations and symbols.
• Interactive CD-ROM packaged with the book reinforces learning with additional exercises, a new image glossary, and an audio glossary.
• More case studies and medical reports in the text and many more on CD-ROM provide a context for learning medical terms.
Medical Detective activity on the CD-ROM encourages readers to identify and correctly use medical terms within context of health care.
• Additional new and updated pathology photographs illustrate common diseases and disorders.
• The Spanish glossary contains new illustrations of the human body, including a full-body view and views of the skeletal, nervous reproductive, and endocrine systems - with labels in English and Spanish.
Medical Scramble exercises reinforce terms and make learning fun.
Picture Show exercises present an illustration and give the student the opportunity to apply knowledge to medical situations.

This book has lots of practicing and review sheets with an easy to use glossary for the medical terms themselves and a glossary that breaks down the prefixes and suffixes! The CD/DVD is useful. The only thing I have to say is about the study CD. Love the games and study guides on the CD, however, the games only have some set teminology and it doesn't cycle through others past that. So, you're really only studying the ones they give you to study for.

While this book is short, it is very helpful. I am a highschool student looking into the field of internal medicine and this book has helped me in becoming acclimated with the field of medicine. Because this book comes with a companion CD that contains practice problems and flash cards, it makes the material much more understandable. While learning definitions to medical terms is important, this book shows why the term means what it does and teaches the reader how to understand other terms easily. I highly recommend this book for any aspiring doctor or anyone who wants to learn more about the field of medicine.

I am entering the nursing field and this book gave me a great jump start. I can't believe how much I learned just in the first chapter! The book has A LOT of reviews which definitely helped me understand and memorize terms. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of entering any part of the medical profession.

I originally borrowed this from the library but ended up buying it in the end. Easy to follow, short lessons that don't overwhelm you. You will learn enough in the first five to ten pages, that you will impress yourself! The CD ROM included is good, it matches the same learning pattern as the book, with scoring. The book is easier to follow than others. It's set up like an interactive textbook, but on higher quality paper than usual. Straightforward, intense learning, but anyone can do it. I have no real medical experience, but really added skills to my resume after I finished this book. Somehow, this stuff stuck.

This book is wonderful. It makes it so easy to learn medical terminology on your own. Great for students entering the nursing profession. It comes with a CD that is also extreemly helpful. You can't go wrong with this book.

The textbook only has 5 chapters. Every chapter is full of activities. It also comes with 2 cds. The first cd helps teach how to pronounce the terms properly, and the other cd gives addition activities with exams of the material in the textbook.

I just finished my first semester of nursing school, and this was one of my textbooks. This was a wonderful resource. When you do the exercises in the book and on the CD it gives you a better grasp on spelling and understanding medical terminology. My only complaint is that I was hoping for more interactive exercises on the CD, like exercises that include the medical abbreviations and more comprehensive vocabulary exercises. Besides the lack of exercises on the CD I thought that this book was a wonderful reference. This book is a must for students entering (or in) the medical field, or anyone interested in learning more/understanding more about the medical field.
