Overview

This easy-to-read, self-teaching worktext lets students learn by doing – writing terms, labeling diagrams, and completing fun exercises and review sheets. For the first time in full color, this concise edition uses the same tried-and-true method as Chabner's The Language of Medicine: it shows how medical terms can be broken down into smaller word parts to aid in deciphering the word meanings. With extensive hands-on practice, repetition, and case studies, the thoroughly revised 3rd edition helps students acquire basic knowledge of body systems and practice using medical terms in proper context. It's everything students need to start their medical career!

New to this Edition:

  1. Full-color images throughout make terminology come alive, illustrating anatomical and pathological terms.
  2. A new section covering Classes of Drugs explains and lists major classes of drugs with examples in each class.
  3. More practical application exercises have been added throughout the text.
  4. More information of body systems provides a valuable, clinical context for word usage.
  5. Spanish glossary has been expanded to include even more helpful terms and translations.
Key Features:
  1. Self-teaching workbook format allows students to complete exercises, label diagrams, take pronunciation tests, and fill in review sheets – with answers provided to verify their understanding of the material.
  2. Practical case studies and vignettes illustrating medical terms show real-life applications of medical terminology.
  3. Informative and easily accessible appendices provide an excellent source of reference.
  4. Easy-to-understand style assumes no previous knowledge of science or biology. Organized in a logical format, with a highly visual approach for ease of learning.

"This thoroughly revised new edition offers clear and simple text, exercises, pronunciation guides, review sheets, brief medical vignettes, full-color diagrams of body systems, an English to Spanish appendix, and glossary of terms." Appropriate for: Allied Health Students, Healthcare Professionals.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Timothy C. Dennis, BSBA, RRT, NPS (William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: This is a well written and useful book for learning medical terminology. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: As stated by the author, the goal was "to present a comprehensive introduction and overview of medical terminology in a straightforward and easy manner for students who had no previous background in biology or medicine." The author has certainly achieved this goal. Books such as this are very important because becoming proficient at medical terminology is crucial to the success of professionals in many fields.
Audience: The audience includes all allied health students, including those in career schools, colleges, hospitals, and other settings. The scope and level of this book is appropriate for this audience.
Features: The first chapter starts by describing basic word structure and builds from there. It provides the necessary information to begin learning medical terminology immediately. A variety of tools assist learners, including illustrations and photographs, written exercises, review questions, practical applications, and puzzles. Roughly half the book is composed of three interesting appendixes and a fairly extensive glossary. A CD-ROM and audio CD are also included.
Assessment: This is an outstanding resource for anyone who has the desire to learn medical terminology. The methods used are practical as well as enjoyable. The author's great care in describing word pronunciations, word part meanings, and definitions will help to maximize the student's chance of success. The complex and ever-expanding vocabulary of medicine justifies the publication of this edition as well as others in the future.

Awesome way to break into the medical language!

This book has lots of practicing and review sheets with an easy to use glossary for the medical terms themselves and a glossary that breaks down the prefixes and suffixes! The CD/DVD is useful. The only thing I have to say is about the study CD. Love the games and study guides on the CD, however, the games only have some set teminology and it doesn't cycle through others past that. So, you're really only studying the ones they give you to study for.

    I Also Recommend:

Great for acclimation to medical field

While this book is short, it is very helpful. I am a highschool student looking into the field of internal medicine and this book has helped me in becoming acclimated with the field of medicine. Because this book comes with a companion CD that contains practice problems and flash cards, it makes the material much more understandable. While learning definitions to medical terms is important, this book shows why the term means what it does and teaches the reader how to understand other terms easily. I highly recommend this book for any aspiring doctor or anyone who wants to learn more about the field of medicine.

    Super Easy To Understand!

I am entering the nursing field and this book gave me a great jump start. I can't believe how much I learned just in the first chapter! The book has A LOT of reviews which definitely helped me understand and memorize terms. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of entering any part of the medical profession.

    Worked for me!

I originally borrowed this from the library but ended up buying it in the end. Easy to follow, short lessons that don't overwhelm you. You will learn enough in the first five to ten pages, that you will impress yourself! The CD ROM included is good, it matches the same learning pattern as the book, with scoring. The book is easier to follow than others. It's set up like an interactive textbook, but on higher quality paper than usual. Straightforward, intense learning, but anyone can do it. I have no real medical experience, but really added skills to my resume after I finished this book. Somehow, this stuff stuck.

Brief, and comprehensive overview of the body

The textbook only has 5 chapters. Every chapter is full of activities. It also comes with 2 cds. The first cd helps teach how to pronounce the terms properly, and the other cd gives addition activities with exams of the material in the textbook.

    Very helpful!

I just finished my first semester of nursing school, and this was one of my textbooks. This was a wonderful resource. When you do the exercises in the book and on the CD it gives you a better grasp on spelling and understanding medical terminology. My only complaint is that I was hoping for more interactive exercises on the CD, like exercises that include the medical abbreviations and more comprehensive vocabulary exercises. Besides the lack of exercises on the CD I thought that this book was a wonderful reference. This book is a must for students entering (or in) the medical field, or anyone interested in learning more/understanding more about the medical field.
