Editorial Reviews

Jean Smith Temple
This is a general medical terminology modular learning tool designed to assist the student in learning medical terminology. It contains 16 chapters, three appendixes, flash cards, and a diskette. The purpose of this book is to provide the student with an understanding of medical terminology. The objectives are clearly met by the author. This is a much-needed set of objectives in the healthcare arena. This book is designed for nursing students and could easily be used by allied health students in all fields. The book is also easy to use as a refresher for those who are in practice. This book is filled with very colorful illustrations related to anatomy, physiology, and various diagnostic procedures. Color is also used to help distinguish and put together various words. The table of contents and index are complete. Appendices are very useful and include a very comprehensive glossary of pathology and procedures, prefixes and suffixes, and abbreviations with meanings. Flash cards and a diskette make it very friendly for those who need additional review. This is the third edition of this book, and an excellent learning tool for nursing and allied health students at all levels. The book is easy to use when review is needed for only one body system area as a refresher. The overall design and format are very easy to follow. Excellent learning exercises are provided in a number of different formats such as short answer, true/false, and multiple choice items. This colorful book is one that students can enjoy using and easily follow the instructions. Bookstores should definitely invest in this book.

This is the second edition of this excellent introductory textbook in medical terminology (first edition, 1988). The book is accompanied by audiotapes and individual activities for students and an instructor's guide, computerized test bank, overhead transparencies, and classroom activities for instructors. The purpose is to introduce students of health professions to medical terminology through word parts, then body systems. This purpose is served well because the text is easy to read, color is used to highlight terms, there are many color illustrations, and the audiotapes assist pronunciation. The book is appropriate for nursing and allied health students beginning to learn medical terminology. This text features many full color anatomical drawings in great detail, very helpful in learning medical terminology. This attractive, spiral-bound book uses color to highlight terms and headings. Students will appreciate the good amount of explanatory material, appendixes for word parts and abbreviations, and flash cards. Each chapter has exercises and a list of words to use with the audiotapes. The audiotapes are clear and pronounce and define 50 to 75 difficult terms for each chapter. Excellent organization and physical presentation are the outstanding characteristics of this text. The extra resources that accompany the book make it an excellent teaching text for both students and instructors. Word parts and a review self-test before introducing body system chapters reinforce the importance of learning the basics. Body system chapters are thorough and cover structures, pathology, procedures, and medications. The new edition is better organized, with subheadings, chapter outlines, and up datesof terms.

Books did not come on time!!!

I thought I was dotting my "I"(s) and crossing my "T"(s) by going into Barnes and Nobles and paying; and having them process my order. The first set of books took and extra 7 or 9 business days past the date I was given. By then School was about to start so I was getting nervous. So I called and the automated service said the book had arrive and was signed for by UPS 5 days ago!!! When a rep. got on the phone they did send me another book out but once again I had to wait for it. And on top of that, be that girl that started to get on other peoples nerves because I was looking over their shoulder to get info out of the book that I should have had weeks ago!
