Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David A. Voran, MD (University of Kansas School of Medicine)
Description: It is a testament to the explosive growth of the internet that one of the best introductory books on the subject that took less than a year to bring to print is already dated in critical areas. Dr. Pareras has done a masterful job of providing the novice user a very simple, practical, well-organized, thorough text on the internet. This book is the best independent reference guide I have read to date on the subject.
Purpose: This book is written specifically to answer many of the basic questions concerning the practical medical uses of the internet expressly for physicians and clinicians. This book succeeds in giving the reader a number of very useful resources as well as the means to find new resources about any of the mentioned subjects. It is packed full of tips that are well illustrated in maximizing the usefulness of the web and minimize the frustrations many novice users encounter.
Audience: The book is extremely well organized and features literally hundreds of screen captures that complement the textual material in an unobtrusive and informative fashion. In addition, numerous on-line references and lists are made available at the conclusion of each section for the reader. Dr. Pareras' hotlist of websites will be available in 11/96 at: http://pathfinder.com/LittleBrown/ rather than thehttp://www.littlebrown.com as advertised in the front cover of the book.
Features: The author does devote too much space to protocols that are ever decreasing in usefulness (FTP, TELNET, GOPHER, and WAIS). Although very useful, the reader may get discouraged plowing through these features before getting into the really useful web material.
Assessment: I found this book to be the best introduction to the internet for medical personnel, and I highly recommend it.
