Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This is the third edition of a study guide in a series covering a number of medical disciplines. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: It is intended to help prepare medical students for the inpatient clerkship in medicine.
Audience: Plainly, this is a book for medical students, and the bulleted format makes it an easy reference to have available. While using student reviewers seems to add credibility to the book, the contributors are medical residents and attendings and I am not sure student reviewers add much beyond some marketing value.
Features: The book is billed as a student-to-student guide to high-yield facts to prepare medical students for the inpatient clerkship. As the amount of knowledge can be daunting for medical students just beginning their patient care experience, this book distills the body of knowledge down to a manageable and practical load. The bulleted format makes absorbing the material somewhat easier and, while the breadth of material is extensive, the depth is somewhat lacking.
Assessment: Overall, this is a helpful addition to one's preparation for the medicine clerkship, but it should not be relied upon as the sole resource to prepare for the clinical experience.
