Editorial Reviews

Phillip M. Harter
This book is the first edition of a collection of all those medical cartoons you've been cutting out and saving for years. The author states the position that ""a sense of humor is a vital bodily function."" He intends this book to entertain, make you laugh, and provide a tension reliever and safety valve. (What more laudable goal is there than to care for the health of those who care for others?) This book is also an excellent source for those cartoons you wish you had put into your slide presentation on ""Advances in the Management of Erysipeloid of Rosenbach,"" but never had the time to find. This book can be enjoyed by anyone who has ever thought about using a stethoscope and is willing to laugh. This book features the works of more than 60 cartoonists and humorists, including Garry Trudeau, Jim Unger, Gary Larson, and Gahan Wilson. Except for the color cover, the collection is of black-and-white cartoons. This book serves to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. We need to take the time to laugh. It is an excellent collection of some very funny cartoons, by some very funny cartoonists. Although this book is not likely to become required reading during medical, nursing, or paramedic school, it couldn't hurt. It would be reasonable to prescribe it: ""Rx: ii pages O.U., B.I.D.; Do not take while driving or operating heavy machinery."" If we are not careful, we could end up like poor Hiram S. Dudson, whose tombstone on page 168 proclaims him to be ""Member, Placebo Group!""
