Purpose: The purpose is to refocus the teaching plans of educators and students on the high-value, must-understand diagnoses commonly encountered in medical practice. The editors and contributors bring much-needed attention to these areas with concise coverage of each area.
Audience: This book has enormous value for every medical student, resident, and attending in practice as an initial study guide, and for those with long-term experience as a refresher. Contributors are highly respected educators at major teaching institutions around the United States.
Features: This convenient, pocket-sized book is organized by traditional organ systems. Introductory chapters discuss the concepts of competency-based education and how to survive a medical clerkship as a student. These are followed by chapters highlighting the diagnoses that everyone treating patients must understand. Concepts are conveyed using a bullet-style format, and many intuitive charts and tables impart the important facts and differential diagnoses that should be considered. Very interesting and equally relevant is the "Zebra Zone," where differential diagnoses that are important but infrequently encountered are discussed. This is a nice touch, putting the zebras in their proper perspective. Included in the price is a web-based, full-text version that is very easy to use.
Assessment: Overall, this is a small but powerful book on the leading edge of medical education. It looks at both the academic and the practical sides of medicine. Subsequently, it is one of the high return-on-investment books in a field full of redundant books.
