Overview

The student tested-and-reviewed way to prep for the medicine shelf exam and the USMLE Step 2 CK

"I thought it was a fantastic review. The questions covered a wide variety of important key areas in medicine without going into more esoteric topics. I felt the answers were discussed very thoroughly as well, and incorporated a lot of current information." — Reza Samad, Medical School, SUNY Upstate Medical University

"The answers were of consistently high quality . . . and present necessary concepts in a concise manner that hopefully will reinforce an existing fund of knowledge."

— Edward Gould, Medical Student, SUNY Upstate Medical University

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This is one of a large number of USMLE preparation books written by university faculty members. It consists of 500 multiple choice questions with answers based upon explanations from textbooks listed in the bibliography. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: Intended to help prepare medical students for the USMLE examination, clearly this book also could be useful in refreshing one's memory or as part of a general medicine board review.
Audience: Medical students are the audience. The authors and contributors are faculty of the Texas Tech University Health Science Center.
Features: The 500 questions and explanations for the answers make up the content. Other than the books listed in the bibliography, there are no references.
Assessment: As USMLE preparation, this book is useful, but it should not be the only study source for the examination.

    I Also Recommend:

Good read for PA and MD students

I am a PA student who is currently preparing for the PANCE. I have read through all of my PANCE review books--but, I wanted a little something more. I read this book (which is all question and review), only, just prior to my final exam. I scored well above the mean and at the top of the curve. I also feel that this is a good book for PA's who want to brush up or are changing field from a specialty to general medicine/ER work. I felt that it was applicable and practical. I actually had an attending who liked it as much as I did. It's a book that I will remain in my bookcase beyond the completion of my PANCE. I also recommend any of the case files series. What I like about these books is that they are not only fact driven, but the case scenarios help students and residents acquire a "gut" instinct sooner. I have been complimented on my ability to do so by every attending (including the ICU--which I had never been exposed to before) I have encountered and I feel that these books, combined with common sense, have helped at least a little bit. Hope this helps all you students out there who are hunting B&N reviews for which books to purchase! :)
p.s. I gave it four stars because I wish that it was bigger in that I wish there were even more questions and therefore wasn't as comprehensive as it could have been. I was sad to reach the end of it since it is such a great resource.
