Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
A history of medicine is presented with abundant and colorful pictures of ancient relics, instruments, medical procedures and photographs of art. While the book is based primarily on European history, it is a fascinating exploration of trends from 2000 BC until today. The chemical, surgical, diagnostic and spiritual aspects of medicine are discussed and brief technical explanations are given of procedures such as blood letting, amputations, drug therapy and current diagnostic technology. The importance of epidemiology is mentioned as well as alternative treatments, Eastern philosophies and spiritual healing beliefs. Subjects covered are a good representation of the field and should tempt interested readers to study further. The book is indexed and is a useful reference for both the history of medicine and the general scope of the field. 2000, (orig. 1995), Eyewitness Books/Dorling Kindersley, Ages 10 up, $15.95.
