Editorial Reviews

Booknews
A facsimile edition of published by J. M. Dent, London, in 1927. It was the second in a projected six-volume series that renowned costume architect and archaeologist Norris completed only four of before his death in 1950. He describes various garments and accessories, illustrates them with line drawings, demonstrates the construction of many with patterns and instructions, and defines the often exotic terminology. He also includes 16 color plates of his own paintings. The reference could be very valuable in theater, book illustration, or period reconstructions. Annotation c. A solid beginners resource

This book is a good place to start researching medieval clothing. Most of the focus on the clothing of nobility, but some information about middle class/common folks' clothing is included. Norris begins with William the Conquerer & works his way through the monarchs to Henry VII, providing useful background information about French, German, and English rulers during those times. I question some of the 'facts' that Norris presents, because the original representation of the garment in question isn't often shown (ie, paintings, illuminations, etc). Norris' visuals are most often his own sketches interpreting garment design. Take some of the blanket statements with a grain of salt, and use this as a springboard to your own research into extant garments and artworks that show actual garments.
