Houston's book was one of the first I read about medieval costumes in Europe, and I've referred to it time and time again. The best thing about this book is that the garments/illustrations are taken directly from historical resources, which can be verified through other means. The book covers noble, middle class, and peasant costume, as well as ecclesiastical (sp?) garments. I'm not interested in religious garments, but the other sections of the book more than make up for their inclusion! If you're looking for scale patterns or construction details, look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for info about the changes in fit and silhouette over the years, as well as detailed diagrams of jewelry and fabric patterns, this book is fabulous.
