Editorial Reviews

Booknews
When anthropologist Varisco went to Yemen to study traditional irrigation and agriculture, he realized that people were using methods that were described in medieval texts, and that he could interpret and clarify the texts by watching. The 16 papers here emerged from his epiphany and were originally published in journals between 1983 and 1996. They describe such aspects as the rain periods in pre-Islamic Arabia, water sources and traditional irrigation in Yemen, the production of sorghum in highland Yemen, indigenous plant protection methods, agricultural time reckoning in the "Urjuza" of Hasan al-`Affari, a royal crop register, and an anonymous 14th-century almanac. Includes extensive passages in the original Arabic. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
