The focus of Fernand Braudel's great work is the Mediterranean world in the second half of the sixteenth century, but Braudel ranges back in history to the world of Odysseus and forward to our time, moving out from the Mediterranean area to the New World and other destinations of Mediterranean traders. Braudel's scope embraces the natural world and material life, economics, demography, politics, and diplomacy.
"No historical work of our time has done so much to alter one's approach not just to Mediterranean history, but tothe historian's task."--Max Beloff
Fernand Braudel (1902-1985) was a member of the editorial board of Annales and of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, and chief adminsitrator of the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme. His three-volume work, Civilization and Capitalism, is available from California.
This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand what's going on in the region called 'The Greater Middle East'. It simply gives 'compelling evidence' and explanations for many of the unfolding events. Watching news and reading about current affairs doesn't always give the broadest possible view. But such book is extremely helpful for knowing why a certain thing happened. Those having dificulties in following the transformations in Western Europe, the Balkans or Northern Africa must read this book which is the most accurate and detailed work about a the interaction of Christianty and Islam.
