Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Mus, who has been inspired by the teachings of Ferdinand Bac and Russell Page, may be a great designer, but if so, this book does not do him justice. The text by McDowell, editor in chief of the magazine R sidence D coration, is predominantly chatty, providing little analysis of, and no background on, the projects featured beyond the extensive and amusing quotations from Mus. Mus relates the challenges he has faced in designing these Mediterranean-style gardens, but with no evidence of the process-either in sketches or detailed plans-it is difficult to judge his accomplishment. The extensive photographs of 20 private gardens Mus designed, primarily in southern France, make the case that he is an accomplished landscape artist, but the design of the book spoils the effect by bleeding the shots across the gutter, even on half-page photographs. There is no scholarly apparatus at all: no list of Mus's projects or of plants he uses, no biography, no bibliography, and no index. A poorly designed collection of stunning photographs with entertaining quotations by the artist; not recommended.-Daniel Starr, Metropolitan Museum of Art Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
