Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-K—In a style reminiscent of Lucy Cousins's "Maisy" books (Candlewick), Braun shows a wide-eyed black cat in a red scarf playing with a box. The omniscient narrator carries on a one-way dialogue, describing imaginative Meeow's actions and intentions as he transforms the box into a bright red fire engine. Prompts such as "Be careful, Meeow!" and "What can Meeow be making?" encourage listeners to identify with the cat. The book is simple and direct, and pulls together all the ingredients (box, red paint, green scissors) in the same methodical way that toddlers hard at work would. Uncluttered pages and primary colors make this a highly attractive book, as does the tactile jacket that allows readers to stroke fuzzy Meeow.—Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA
Kirkus Reviews
An ordinary box provides ripe opportunities for a cat and his boundless imagination. Using household objects, Meeow transforms a plain brown carton into a blazing-red fire engine. Clear, bold art supports the direct narration, providing an encouraging explanation through each appropriate page turn: "Meeow is going to cut a hole in the big red box with his scissors. Be careful, Meeow!" The subsequent scene reveals the colorful creation, and the upbeat voice energizes the spare text: "Well done, Meeow!" Braun successfully demonstrates his understanding of his audience's thirst for fledgling independence as Meeow effectively controls his surroundings. A large font and solid, bright colors carry the fluid digital images. The adorable black feline provides sweetness and spunk. Meeow's red scarf drapes dramatically across his neck; his wide expressive eyes and tiny pink nose animate each clean spread. Utilizing chairs and teamwork, Meeow returns with his friends for another pleasing adventure in Meeow and the Little Chairs (978-1-906250-88-1). Celebrate the wonders of imaginative play in these solid selections for the toddler set. (Picture book. 1-3)

    My daughter's favorite!

I've been reading this book to my 19 month-old daughter for months along with multiple other stories. For some odd reason this one has recently become an absolute favorite. For the past several nights she has specifically asked to read "nee-naah" at least twice each night! The illustrations and story lines are simple, and the objects repeat throughout the story so she can follow their progress as it evolves. The colors are bright and blocked and the type large so it stands out. I love the theme of creativity and imagination so much I'm getting the other Meeow stories in hopes of mixing it up a bit...
