Children's Literature
As part of the "Brand New Readers" series, this is a collection of four booklets, each highlighting Dinah the Dinosaur. Each booklet focuses on helping new readers identify words and understand their meaning by using the accompanying illustrations. Stories include "Dinah's Dream," "Hide and Seek," "Little and Big," and "Dinah Likes to Eat." This collection is geared toward helping parents and children work together and the books do not need to be read in any particular sequence. Parents are given advice about how to use the booklet with the children. Combined with what new readers are learning in school, these booklets will help children develop their literacy skills more fully. 2000, Candlewick Press, $10.99 and $4.99. Ages 4 to 6. K-Gr 1-These titles are made accessible to their audience through their reliance on repetitive, predictable texts supported by picture cues. The four stories in each book are told in short sentences, one per page. "Ruby [the sheep] eats hay./Munch, munch./Ruby eats more hay./Munch, munch, munch./Ruby eats and eats./Kate [the cow] sees the hay./Kate eats hay too. Munch, munch!/Kate sees Ruby! `Baa!'" "Dinah Dinosaur sees a little bird./She sees a big bird./She sees a little tree./She sees a big tree./She sees a little hole./She does NOT see the big hole./She falls in./OUCH!" Most of the scenarios attempt a surprise twist at the end to add a bit of humor to the otherwise tedious structure. Suggestions for adults to help beginning readers and brief introductions that preview the plot and vocabulary are included. Illustrations are done in a simple, colorful, childlike style. The stories are similar to the leveled, guided reading series provided by educational publishers. The texts and art do not have enough appeal for sharing aloud, but they do provide adequate skill reinforcement for fledgling readers.-Adele Greenlee, Bethel College, St. Paul, MN Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
