School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-4-A readable but flawed book that offers detailed glimpses of Hillary Rodham Clinton's life from her childhood, to her years in college and law school, to her career as a first-rate lawyer, and currently to her role as First Lady. Her many achievements are highlighted. Clinton's enthusiasm and dedication to all of her endeavors, including being a mother, are evident. She is portrayed as being verbal and strong as well as sensitive and caring. Unfortunately, the lack of documentation for the many quotes used throughout makes readers question whether they were simply invented to add emphasis or color to the text. On more than one occasion, the author implies that the First Lady feels a certain way about some issue, and it is not clear whether these statements are assumptions or facts. The more than 20 black-and-white photos are a plus, but because of the low-grade quality of paper they are printed on, they appear grainy and out of focus. Better biographies about this prominent and powerful woman abound; skip this one.-April L. Judge, Association for Library Service to Children, ALA, Chicago
