Editorial Reviews

The newest "American Girl," Kit is a resourceful young woman struggling during the Great Depression. The book's "Peek into the Past" section showcases information and photographs of the United States during the 1930's. Kit is a sure winner! Part of the "American Girls Collection" series. 2000, Pleasant Company, $5.95. Ages 5 to 10. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8

Living in the Appalachia Mountains during the Depression was a challenge. One evening it started to snow and when it stopped the front of the house was covered. Everyone had to dig out so Dad could get to town. Christmas was coming and there would be the Sears & Roebuck catalogue. During a storm the wind caused a large pine tree to fall on the house. The house was a total loss. The family moved all their belongings into the barn and the animals into the house. As the family got settled in the barn, they knew Papa would build a new house when the snow melted. However, because of the snow the family had to stay on the mountain, so there would be no presents from town. The children decided they would make a hat for their Mama and a shirt for their Papa. On Christmas morning the children found their stockings filled with homemade candy. After breakfast Papa uncovered a special trunk, with presents for all the children. The door opened and their Grandma and Grandpa arrived from town to share Christmas dinner. After dinner they sat around the fireplace and listened to stories about Christmases past. Readers will enjoy this glimpse into Christmas many years ago. 2001, Pleasant Company, $12.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Karen Werner

This is the first story of three about Kit, a spunky young girl living in Cincinnati in the early 1930s. She, along with her family and friends, are learning how to cope during the desperate times of the Great Depression. Despite the worry caused by her father's recent job loss, Kit approaches life with the optimism that has always served her well. Books, imagination, humor, friendship, and resilience help Kit remain steady during an otherwise tragic time. As part of the "American Girls Collection," this book will inspire young girls to keep their chins up during a challenge and at the same time learn about this period in American history. The book ends with an historical snapshot of the early thirties, giving the reader a deeper factual understanding of the Great Depression. Beautiful oil paintings accompany the story and actual photographs enhance the historical section. It is a good book for those girls seeking a series that promises many more stories to come and opportunities to start up a significant collection of dolls and their accessories (there is a perforated sheet for catalogue ordering included). 2000, Pleasant Company Publications, Ages 7 to 10, $12.95. Gr 2-4-Set in Cincinnati, OH, during the Great Depression, these books introduce fourth-grade Kit. In Meet Kit, her father must close his car dealership and join the large number of unemployed. In an effort to make ends meet, her mother takes in boarders; Mrs. Howard and her son Stirling settle into Kit's newly redecorated bedroom, while the girl makes the best of her new space in the attic. In Kit Learns a Lesson, her older brother gets a job rather than attend college, and Kit helps her mother clean. Additional boarders have moved in and there is more work than ever. When a classmate's taunts lead to an altercation, Stirling, Kit, and her best friend are punished. They must deliver food collected by the students to the local soup kitchen, and Kit is shocked to see her father on line for lunch. Still, this is a somewhat idealized portrayal of the Depression. Full-page color illustrations and spot art appear throughout. Photos, reproductions, and explanations of the period follow in each of these transitional chapter books.-Debbie Feulner, Northwest Middle School, Greensboro, NC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

    Money $$$ Matters

1934 Meet Kit - Growing up during America's Great Depression Kit learns to value money $$$$ and understands why money matters to people and what money is used to purchase. Some sacrifices need to be made during these troubled times for Kit, her family, and people across the USA. This novel is good for a history lesson on the Great Depression in the USA, it could even explain what is happening during the present USA recession from 2008 until the present time with unemployment, homelessness, and some people's feeling of hopelessness. Kit finds hope and opportunity in the many changes that occur in her family and home. This story encourages readers to stay hope-filled and be ready to face present and future challenges.

    I Also Recommend:

    I like Kit

I liked this book a lot. Kit's family did not have a lot of money. This story took place during the Great Depression in the United States. Kit is 9 years old and has a 16 year old brother named Charlie. Kit's mother got angry with her. Some parts of the book made me sad and some made me happy. I like this book and I think other girls will like it too.

    I love this book.

This book is great. I would recommend this book to other kids to read. This book takes place during the time of the Great Depression in 1934. People were loosing their jobs. Kit's mom had a garden club and one lady lost her job. Kit's mom offered them to stay there. When Kit found out her dad had lost his job, she was scared. Before her dad told Kit that he had lost his job at the auto shop; Kit's brother told her before he did. Her mom was making a boarding home with nurses. The reason they were hosting a boarding house was so they could get money to pay of the house. They had a loan from the bank to pay off. That's what this wonderfull story was all about.

This book is realy great. I thought it was very close to real life during the great depression in 1934. This book was about a girl named Kit. She was a very determined little girl. When she found out her dad had lost his job at the auto shop she was worried that they would be evicted from their house. So her mother decided to start a boarding house. There was a nurse, a doctor, and a lady from the mothers garden club. They had to have a boarding house because they needed the money to keep their house. They had a loan on their house so they had to pay off the bank to keep it.

    Education in a fun way

This book was a great book. It was not like one of those boring history books. Kit is a 10 year old girl who is living during the 1930's. Otherwise know as the great deppression.
