Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
A young boy narrates this story about what his mom does and what activities he does with his mom. Readers learn that his mom takes him to school, works, and reads to him. There is some focus on words that start with the M sound, although it is not emphasized so much that the story becomes nonsensical. The text consistently appears on the left page; color photographs fill the right pages. In nearly every case, there is one sentence per page forming one line of text; however, one of the pages of the story does have a sentence with two lines of text. At first glance, the text seems simple; however, beginning readers may need additional support for the different sentence structures utilized in this story. The structure of the sentences varies; this is not a patterned text. One sentence is in a mild imperative or command format. Some sentences have one or two noun subjects, indirect and direct objects, and prepositional phrases. The photographs provide some support for the text. Careful consideration may be needed to match early readers with this book. An instructional guide provides some tips, and the back of the book provides additional ideas. This book is a part of the "Power Phonics" series. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
