Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
In this nonfiction book in the "Meet My Neighbor" series, very simple text with large photographs follow some of the things a chef does when he is preparing food for a wedding party. The book begins with a photograph of the narrator's neighbors, a chef with his wife and children at home. We see them eating a dinner of tacos that the daughters have helped their father prepare. Then the chef, Neil, begins work to plan the food for a wedding party. He checks the list of foods he has to buy, and then we see him at the market squeezing an avocado to make sure it is fresh. Next is a photo of Neil in the kitchen in his large walk-in refrigerator. We see him cutting the salmon, and then Neil and his helpers put the cooked food on plates. The servers carry the meals out to the wedding guests, and a large photo shows the server bringing the food to the bride and groom. Neil and his helpers put the cheesecake on plates and pour caramel over the cheesecake. At the end, the wedding party is thanking Neil for preparing the meal. The book contains a table of contents and a small glossary. Young readers will learn some of the basic work of a chef, and the large photos will enhance their understanding. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
