Children's Literature - Phyllis KennemerA Table of Contents lists ten scenes relating to the life of Roberta, a real-life paramedic. She is shown at home with her toddler son and in her work environment as she and her colleagues fix meals together and wait for emergency calls. Roberta checks the equipment in the ambulance and her own bag of supplies, and she is ready when a call arrives. She and her partner drive to an apartment building and bring out an injured person. The sequence of events gets confused at this point. Roberta takes another call on the ambulance radio, and the pictures of her bringing a patient into the hospital feature a different person than the one on the stretcher in front of the apartment building. What happened to the first injured person? Each page is filled with a full-color photograph and a boxed inset of brief text. The last page is a picture glossary featuring an ambulance, a medicine bag, a stretcher, a stethoscope, and a two-way radio. This fine basic, although somewhat confusing, introduction to the occupation of paramedic is part of "Meet My Neighbor" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
