Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tiffany Erickson
For readers wanting concise information on the St. Louis Cardinals, this book will fit the bill. Readers will learn the basics of Busch Stadium, team uniforms, and former Cardinals greats like Stan Musial and Ozzie Smith. (Steroid-enhanced slugger Mark McGwire is mentioned in the record breakers section, but not as a Cardinal great.) Baseball fans will enjoy learning about Fredbird, the team's mascot, and reading a limerick about outfielder Lou Brock. In the ABCs of Baseball, readers are asked to find everything in a particular picture starting with the letter C, but to get full credit, readers must list body parts like chin and cheek, making this activity a bit of a stretch. New vocabulary is featured in bold, and is also defined in a small glossary in the back. An index is also provided, which is more like a tool for showing children how to use an index than a necessary part of the book. Overall, libraries needing to beef up the baseball collection, especially for the newest readers, will want to consider this volume. Reviewer: Tiffany Erickson
