Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Toni Jourdan
A veritable Who’s Who of Marvel’s Super Hero universe, Petersen introductions range from Ant Man to Wonder Man, and all the characters (alphabetically) in between. We learn a bit about many of the characters that Hollywood has brought to life jumping off the pages of comic books throughout the years. Highlighted words simplify what each super hero is known for as in Black Widow and her “extraordinary strength, speed, and stamina.” Or Captain America who has the “super-soldier serum.” How about Hulk “an angry green giant.” Many of the Marvel super heroes were unfamiliar to me as they may be to you, but many are linked to categories of X-Men, Avengers, Asgard inhabitants or Guardians of the Galaxy. Some of the super heroes started as villains such as Hawkeye, Emma Frost, Moon Knight (Marc Spector), Namor and Nighthawk. Mutants, accidents, or just growing up as a son of Zeus or even on the planets of Asgard super heroes can come from anywhere. Some super heroes are handsome while others are made up of plants since they arose from a car crash in a swamp, such as Man-Thing. I learned Odin has died three times but would just fall in to what’s called Odinsleep from which he awakens just as super strong as ever. I also found out that Magneto, the super villain from X-Men has three children, Quicksilver, his twin sis, Scarlet Witch and half-sister, Polaris. Also two heroes that caught my attention were Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered raccoon and Squirrel Girl who assisted Iron Man with her ability to leap and her big, bushy tail. Colorful pages and illustrations that practically leap out at you, plus two-page spread “posters” of The Hulk, Spiderman, Thor and Captain America. Fun, bite sized tidbits of information allowing for a perfect Marvel Hero reference book for all ages. Reviewer: Toni Jourdan; Ages 8 to 12.
