Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
This is one of six football-centric, cookie-cutter books in the "Smart About Sports" series. The authors state, in the introductory sentence, that "sports fans in New England like their teams to play hard." Don't all fans? Next, they note that the team's first season was played in 1960, and that their stadium, built in 2002, includes a bridge and a lighthouse. Unfortunately, neither of these is pictured. The next two pages show eight football player cards from the authors' private collection, along with a fact or two about each player. Other features include a two-page picture spread inviting the reader to find three things starting with the letter P (pads, pants, and Patriots uniform) and a section entitled "Brain Games." These so-called games include a five-line poem and a pair of true-false statements. Further stimulation is provided by maps indicating the birthplaces of several players. The final pages include a record book and a list of football terms like "yard" and "touchdown." It is tough to determine who this book would interest. Surely hardcore fans of any age know what a touchdown is, and the games and maps are an obvious but unsuccessful ploy to justify the "Smart About Sports" premise. Young fans of the sport in general, or the team specifically, may find this a quick and pleasing read; those expected to fork over for this book, however, may be less pleased.
