Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Greene
The newest Dreamworks movie, Turbo, features a snail who loves to go fast. This board book is little more than an advertisement for the movie. It introduces Whiplash and the various other racers from the film and spotlights a picture of the 3-D animated character set on a mostly black background with a short textual description of each. The text is full of catchphrases that make little sense outside of the movie. Coming to the proclamation that Turbo will learn a thing or two from Whiplash and his racing team, adults reading along will sigh with relief that there is a useful moral to the otherwise content-light book. The concluding clarification that the most important thing Turbo will learn is "[t]o stop driving like a car and snail up, baby!" is a disappointment. It is an inane and nonsensical lesson. While this board book may appeal to children obsessed with the movie, and by extension all things "Turbo," parents seeking any narrative—educational, artistic, entertaining or otherwise—should look elsewhere. Part of the "Turbo Racing Team" series. Reviewer: Jennifer Greene
