Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
It's a shark, but it doesn't compete for food with great whites. Its scientific name means "great yawner of the sea," yet it is not harmful to humankind. It is mysterious and hard to study since only fifty have been spotted in the world's oceans. What is it? A megamouth shark. This book, part of Capstone Press' "Shark Zone" series, is a good introduction of this ocean-dweller to young readers. Using simple text with featured vocabulary words and boxed "Shark Facts," the book features information about where the megamouth lives (in warm waters of the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans), what it eats (shrimp, plankton, jellyfish) and why it is almost never spotted by swimmers or sailors (it swims in very deep water by day, shallower water at night). Especially interesting is the fact that the megamouth, with its rounded shout, opens its mouth to reveal a shiny strip inside its mouth. Scientists think this strip is what attracts prey. Although the book describes the megamouth's swimming as "sluggish," this fish's strength is that it has more than fifty rows of small, hooked teeth. What a remarkable fish! The book includes color photo illustrations, an index, glossary, list of books to read, plus a child-appropriate Internet site. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
