Overview

This is the band that split off from legendary Puerto Rican percussionist Cortijo; it's still up and running after 30 years, making deeply swinging music and still under the capable direction of pianist Rafael Ithier, who is a hero of the music. Some of the band's best material featured the singer Andy Montañez, who is also still singing as well as he ever did. MEJOR QUE NUNCA, recorded in 1976, is full of great songs and fine improvising by Montañez, backed by sophisticated rhythms and harmonies. It's loaded with hits, including the tune "Pachito E Che," which is a party elixir if there ever was one. Also recommended is the combo's take on the Latin soul groove wildly popular in New York in the late '60s, the boogaloo. BOOGALOOS CON EL GRAN COMBO on the Gema/Aponte label is rocking and fun.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - José A. Estévez
This El Gran Combo effort shows the band in the mid-'70s, and the band's joyful sound still finds enthusiastic acceptance. "La Soledad" (composed by Roberto Angleró) and "No Me Olvides, Mulata" were the better-promoted tunes. This was Andy Montañez's farewell recording as an EGC member. There is a special moment after another in this recording.
