Description: Continuing the classic tradition of preceding editions, this update remains true to Dr. Ruth Memmler's original vision for an introductory anatomy and physiology textbook. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The authors list multiple goals for this book: to provide the essential knowledge of human anatomy and physiology at an ideal level detail and in language that is clear and understandable, illustrate the concepts discussed with anatomic art, incorporate the most recent scientific findings into the fundamental detail, include pedagogy designed to enhance interest and understanding, to teach basic anatomy and medical terminology used in healthcare settings, and present an integrated teaching-learning package for a successful learning experience. The authors have met all their stated objectives.
Audience: This is a textbook for introductory-level health professions and nursing students who need a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology, and the interrelationships between function and structure. The authors are unquestionably experts in their fields.
Features: Like previous editions, this one uses a body systems approach to the study of the human body. It is divided into six units, and groups related information and body systems together. It starts with Body Visible — unique full-color illustrations with transparent overlays for identifying body structures. Each chapter begins with "A&P in Action," a case scenario setting up the chapter, followed by learning tools, learning resources, learning activities, learning outcomes, and then, "A Look Back," a brief review of how the chapter relates to prior chapters. The book uses boldfaced new terms, pronunciations, checkpoints to reinforce learning within sections, multiple images, drawings, tables, clinical perspectives, and a chapter wrap-up which has a summary overview, key terms, word anatomy, and questions for study and review. This book meets the needs of its intended audience and has no shortcomings.
Assessment: This is an outstanding introductory textbook of anatomy and physiology for healthcare students.
