Adler recognizes that we as human beings keep developing, year after year, based on life's experiences. These experiences become the nail on which our personal history becomes the picture. And this picture, he says, is our memory. This memoir, he explains, will show what events not only caused him to become a "singing history professor," but also made him the person he is.
