I read this book for a graduate course in Ancient Israelite Religion, it quickly became my favorite book of the course. Smith uncovers the foundations of Israelite religion and exposes the preconceptions that western culture (particularly Christianity) has of the Israelites. Perhaps Smith's greatest contribution is in looking at the origins of the Israelite deity and how there was tremendous crossover between the Israelites and the Canaanites/ Ugarit (chapter 3). This book is excellent for anyone who wants to delve into current religious scholarship outside of the classroom.
