Overview

The heartwarming true story of the family made legendary by The Sound of Music—as told by Agathe, the eldest von Trapp daughter.

The Sound of Music has captivated generations with its inspiring story of courage, love, music, and familial devotion. Audiences the world over have taken the von Trapp family into their hearts, joyfully celebrating their many triumphs and their daring escape from the Nazis.

In this charming, poignant, and unforgettable memoir, Agathe von Trapp, the eldest daughter, shares the true story of her family, the events that inspired the internationally beloved musical and film, and what happened to the von Trapps in the years after. Blessed with impeccable recall, Agathe shares her vivid memories of a childhood spent in an idyllic Austrian home with her brothers, sisters, and gentle, loving father; of the tragic loss of their mother; of the arrival of Maria; and of the bonding of a close-knit group of siblings who achieved great fame and endured great hardship.

Beautifully adorned with Agathe von Trapp's sketches and personal photographs, Memories Before and After the Sound of Music transports readers to a bygone time as it tells the intimate, loving story of a renowned and truly remarkable family.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The eldest daughter in the Trapp Family Singers writes poignantly, if sentimentally and somewhat selectively, about her charming rural upbringing in Austria and later flight from the Nazi menace to fame and fortune in America. Her family's plight is well known from the Broadway play and later movie, The Sound of Music, based--inaccurately--on a story her stepmother had sold to a German movie producer in 1956 for ,000 and no royalties. However, von Trapp has reconciled herself to the fanciful errors in the musical because of the "warmth and goodwill" it instills in viewers. Here she reconstructs a gossamer past, presided over by her loving father, Georg, a WWI navy hero, and her real mother, Agathe, the granddaughter of the inventor of the torpedo, Robert Whitehead. Together the couple had seven children, living between Pola, on the Adriatic coast, and the Austrian town of Erlhof, on Zeller Lake, where Agathe's mother had a country retreat flourishing with servants, animals, and old-world customs. However, in 1922, Agathe died of scarlet fever, and the family eventually moved to Salzburg, where Papa did indeed marry the 22-year-old governess from the abbey, and the musically inclined family embarked on a string of concert tours that saved them not only from insolvency but also certain imprisonment by the Nazis. In her telling, we learn the real (delightful even if whitewashed) details in this truly providential tale about a tight-knit, devoted, and wonderfully gifted family. (Sept.)
Newsday
“Many fans of ‘The Sound of Music’ are curious about how much of it is truth and how much is poetic license. This newly released paperback offers some first-person insight.”
Washington Post
“Agathe von Trapp’s World War II story is the stuff of legend -- or, as she would have it, myth. In her memoir, Memories Before and After the Sound of Music, von Trapp, the eldest sister in the famed singing family, attempts to set the record straight...Charming.”

    memoir account

Agathe von Trapp, born in 1913, is the eldest daughter of Baron Georg von Trapp. Agathe, her siblings and parents formed the famous Trapp Family Singers, which inspired the popular film, The Sound Of Music. This famous movie was based on books written by Maria about their lives and experiences from her perspective, which ¿ of course ¿ the movie producers had creative license with. After reading Agathe¿s memoir, Memories Before And After The Sound Of Music, interest for Maria¿s books will likely increase once again. When I took on this project I reminisced to my husband about the bonding moments I had with my mother because of the movie he went out and promptly rented the DVD from our local store. I think it is wonderful that the movie has survived all these years and can still be found on movie rental shelves. Memories Before And After The Sound Of Music is likely to experience similar success, simply due to how dear the family¿s story has been to the masses. The book is written as a non-fiction account from Agathe¿s memory ¿ as such, readers will see the changing times through the eyes of the eldest daughter of the family. Perhaps due to the fact that Agathe was a young adult at the time, the story does not include the causes of the turmoil. Her bitterness seeps through here and there ¿ and at times, I got the impression that she had once harbored unpleasant feelings towards Maria and the movie producers, which seem to have healed. Agathe¿s child-like adoration of her biological parents is apparent in their heroic and greater-than-life portrayal - but then, perhaps they really were like that. Readers will find that Agathe¿s book will travel farther back in time, before Maria entered their lives. The biography follows through to what happened after their escape and clarifies common misconceptions. I found it surprising that Agathe was 25 when the family left for America ¿ the only ¿children¿ during the escape were those recently born from Maria. Though this family¿s story is definitely and inspiring riches-to-rags story, one cannot deny that this well- connected family certainly did not suffer like their countrymen. Isolated castles and mansions, pristine lakes and mountains, private farms, fully staffed estates¿ no, this was certainly not suffering, by any account. However, the war left the family with nothing but the loyalty and love of their fans and friends. This was enough for them to survive Ellis Island, find a home in America, record albums, go on tours and establish a successful music camp ¿ which is operating today in Vermont. As a fantastic bonus, the center of the book contains over 30 pages of photos of the family starting in 1875 through to images of the family today, including one shot of the next Trapp family singing group. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Book Reviewer: Lillian Brummet ¿ co-author of Trash Talk, a guide for anyone concerned about his or her impact on the environment ¿ author of Towards Understanding, a collection of poetry.

Great book, sentimental due to her passing away...

I downloaded this ebook the day before she passed away!

She wrote this book to record the real story which is just as great as the Sound of Music's story of the von Trapps. She was disheartened because of the portrayal of her family in the film, but this book sets the account straight. The film leaves out a lot of important things in this woman's (and the family's) life. It is worth the read!
