Overview

Inspired by family stories of life as ethnic Chinese in Central America, Siu (anthropology and Asian/Pacific/American studies, New York U.) examines the peculiar relationships between and among Panama, the US, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Peoples' Republic of China, the relationship between the Chinese homeland state (in the case of this book, Taiwan) and the people of the diaspora, the diminishing role of the US and the advancing role of two Southern Hemisphere states, and the ways area studies need to be reworked to take disaporic situations into account. Siu provides a fascinating history of the disapora and its elements of gender, the migrant experience, the remaking of community, and the tensions of diasporic allegiance, particularly when international political alliances change.
