The buzz around London is all about "lad poet" Scott Barron. After publishing a number of poetry collections, his star is on the rise, he's the darling of publishers, and his books are nosing into bestsellerdom. Better yet, it seems he's close to falling in love…until his glamorous girlfriend dumps him, and rather unceremoniously at that. But this unanticipated breakup is just the first in a number of changes to come about in Scott's personal life, forcing him to question his most primary relationships and his own character flaws.
Scott begins by addressing his relationship with his only sibling, his younger -- but happily married -- brother, Jes. He also uncharacteristically befriends a neighborhood homeless man, Frank. And most unexpectedly, Scott begins the process of reconciliation with his father, whom he has neither seen nor wanted to see for more than 20 years. Of Scott's hard-earned insights, his realization -- so simple, yet so often elusive -- that honest relationships are the best and that romantic love only lasts when both partners are committed, becomes the basis for all of his interactions: familial, romantic, and fraternal.
Debut novelist Jim Keeble is a master at detecting the fragile yet comic side of love, and he reminds readers that both the past and the future are seldom what they seem. (Summer 2003 Selection)
