Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Handknitted sweaters are a luxury-both in the yarns purchased to knit them and in the long hours devoted to the project. Thus, when that sweater you lovingly made for your husband or boyfriend ends up in the bottom of a drawer, it may be enough to end a beautiful relationship. Manning, a well-known knitwear designer with a background in apparel design and fiber arts, says that the trick in producing a garment your man will actually wear is involving him in the planning and knitting process. The first half of the book is devoted to just that: defining the man's personal style; choosing fibers, colors, and a pattern he will wear; and making adjustments based on his body type and the fit he prefers. The second portion of the book consists of a pattern collection of pullovers, vests, and cardigans, most in sizes from small to extra large. Designs for men's sweaters are rare in knitting magazines and books, so this should be a popular acquisition for public libraries. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Just what the guy would want to wear

I bought this book based on the strength of Tara Manning's patterns that have appeared in Interweave Knits over the last few years and from the sweater patterns of hers that I have knit. She writes excellent, CLEAR instructions (not as easy to do as you'd think either). Her patterns typically use large needles (and the majority of these patterns do too) so you'll actually be able to FINISH a sweater or vest or gloves in a modest amount of time. She finally converted me to big needles - she'd probably laugh if she knew that! She has even included a section that gives you advice on determining just WHAT the guy in your life will actually wear--the title is not a joke. The book also includes a guide to what looks good on different body types - a major plus when you can't find out just what the guy in your life likes. I'm pretty fussy on what books I now add to my knitting library as my library is pretty mature. I don't want just another book full of patterns so a new book has to fill a void in my library. Tara's book fits the bill and that simply is why I bought it. Beginning to intermediate knitters would be able to knit most if not all of the patterns in the book. These patterns would look good on women, too, in case you're a gal knitting one for a boyfriend. Remember the adage that you should never knit a sweater for a boyfriend because it will usually end the relationship. My husband is already looking forward to wearing up his 'Jack's Aran' on Christmas morning this year. I sure hope this is the first of many books from Tara! Two thumbs up, Tara!
