All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
While the cover of this three-disc set does reveal it what for it is -- a super-budget compilation -- appearances can be deceiving. For starters, these are all original recordings, not redos or live versions. For another, while many of the cuts are readily available in other configurations, there is a certain aesthetic at work here that places some wonderful -- as in non-obvious -- choices in this mix. Willie Nelson's disc contains his classic blues "Night Life," a killer honky tonk reading of "Crazy Arms," "Streets of Laredo," Once More with Feeling," and the dobro-and-strings-laden countrypolitan "Born to Lose." Waylon Jennings' entry boasts a bluesy reading of "Waltz Across Texas," a take on "Folsom Prison Blues," a duet with Nelson on Tom T. Hall's "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died," and best of all, a somewhat rare version of Jimmy Buffett's early song "He Went to Paris." For a ten spot or less, this is indispensable.
