I strongly recommend this even if you have one of the other recordings of these two warhorses in your library. Bell misses none of these works' high points and plays with joy and panache. His original cadenzas alone are worth the price of the CD. The way he morphs one of the themes of the first movement of the Beethoven into a few bars of the 'Moonlight' Sonata is magic. So few artists do their own cadenzas nowadays that it's a real treat to hear a musician with the guts to take the chance and put him/herself out on that high, windy limb and make a personal statement out of it. My only reservation is against Roger Norrington's rather 'stiff' direction of the orchestra. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
