Since the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Study was published in July 2002, the world of health care decision making has been turned upside down. The clanking of trash cans was deafening worldwide when millions of women tossed their hormonal medications. Immediately, physicians' phones rang off the hook. A panic-striken confused public of sleep-deprived, anxious menopausal women began to descend on doctors' consultation rooms waving hand fans searching for answers.
The perfect Category Five Menopausal Storm had been set into motion. Three conspiring fronts had converged simultaneously: 1) an Internet information savvy baby boomer generation just starting menopause, 2) the premature release of a well done but flawed landmark study on menopause, and 3) a journalistic media hell bent on lightening-like dissemination of the scariest information possible for maximum shock effect.
Menopausal women are sick and tired of getting health care information from the media. MENOPAUSE, JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM is a book written just for these women. Dr. Neil C. Boland is a board-certified seasoned practicing Ob/Gyn Physician and Menopausal Medicine Specialist. Linda LaVelle is a practicing aesthetician of the highest caliber who is menopausal herself. She shares her personal and professional experiences in a delightfully humorous style. It's really about time! Website:

Read the other reviews that go with the hardback cover and soft cover and decide if you want to waste money on buying this. Been a RN for over 45 years and this was just about the worse book I had read on Menopause.

The other reviews were quite interesting and had I followed there advice and not waste money on this book, I would of save time wasted on reading it and the few dollars I paid for the book. Wanted a book on menopause but instead found what every other reviewer found, drug pushing for HRT medicines. CBS news did a recent story on HRT and said NOT to take these powerful and dangerous drugs, only if 100% need for them. HRT can increase your chance for heart attack and stroke, plus dangerous blood clots, the list goes on. This Doctor needs to go back to medical school and learn about safe ways of treating women for medical issues as menopause, something that we all will go thru someday. So the others were right, waste of time and money. Doctor Boland needs to go back to medical school and do more research on JUST the FACTS.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. After reading several of the other reviews, I agree this book is horrible, the reviews are correct on drug pushing and very poor advice. Garage Sale Item and Wizard of OZ story book, yep, they have that correct. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

My husband found this at a local garage sale for a dollar, and thought I'd like to read it since I am in the middle of menopause years. I read it to see if it would help out some of the minor symptoms I have, but found what the other viewers said, its a drug company paradise. I've never taken hormones drugs for something all of us women will one day go through. This Doctor Boland and the women Linda Lavelle need to study natural cures for menopause instead of medication that is harmful and will cause many problems later on in life, blood clots in their legs, lungs, extremely high blood pressure, with high possible stroke and other heart problems. Just read the label that comes with these wonder drugs that is inserted in the package, than decide is it really worth it to take these medications. This book talks about the natural cures for menopause BUT in a negative view, because the Doctor would rather medicate women for these symptoms, rather than take a safe approach to treat these symptoms. WAKE UP PEOPLE, WE have enough medical problems to deal with medication being push on the television every night, Yes take this drug for this symptom and you will be fine BUT WAIT for the side effects that you will experience.... there is another medication that will help that new symptom, BUT WAIT for the side effect for the second new drug, there is also a medication for that.... DO YOU GET THE PICTURE... Doesn't take a medical degree to see who's making out in today world. Do your homework before you rush out for wonder drugs and wonder books. Better yet, sit back when you feel bad, grab a cup of tea, and read a book by another DOCTOR... author ROBIN COOK, and you will feel much better. Maybe ROBIN COOK will someday write a book on Menopause Horror Stories, sure to be a best seller. SAVE your money and get yourself a ROBIN COOK book, you'll be glad you did.Was this review helpful? I found this book in a used book store and wanted to read about menopause but instead found a journey down the Yellow Brick Road to the Land Of OZ right to the drug companies. My sisters and my mother never went on any medication for their menopause problems, something that is so natural for women to go through. Women don't need to take harmful medication into there bodies, that will cause many health problems down the road, in there golden years when life should be enjoyable. I have a wonderful GYN who don't believe in these hormonal replacement ( HT ) drugs but takes a NATURAL approach with vitamins, and diet, which are safe. My sisters and I never went on any HT medication, and with diet, and vitamins and a fantastic Doctor who guide us down the right road to the Land of OZ that was drug free. Save your money and visit the local Health Food Store, they have many books on Natural Remedies for menopause symptoms. I wonder if Dorothy had these medications during her travels to the all powerful OZ,or did the good witch take her down the right path ?Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. After reviewing this book borrowed from a friend who is under going treatment from stage 3 breast cancer, DUE TO hormone drugs, I feel women need to be told the truth. Doctors are so ready to push medication instead of others methods to treat menopause symptoms, its seems there is a MAGIC PILL for everything. Yes , going through menopause for some can be hard, but it will come to pass as it did for our mothers who didn't have the risk of taking these so called MAGIC PILLS. Many of my friends who went on these medications developed, breast cancer, blood clots in their legs, had a higher incidence of heart problems, including extremely high blood pressure. Women who find a honest GYN doctor, will let there patients know about the extreme dangers of these MAGIC PILLS that others are so free to give. I say, forget the MAGIC PILLS, and go through menopause like our mothers did...DRUG FREE..... There are many books on menopause that tell the truth of these drugs and other options for a SAFE and DRUG FREE journey thru menopause...Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Destined To Be a Best Seller Worldwide******* OUTSTANDING Menopause, Just The Facts, Ma'am! This 5 Star Rated Book was just published September 2006, and I'm so glad I bought one. It is destined to become a classic itself. I discovered this book by accident on a friend's recommendation. I found it to be concise, humorous, and easily readable. A quick read. It helped me understand why hormonal therapy may be much safer and appropriate than we originally thought a while back. Homeopathic therapies were presented as well, which I appreciated. YES, we 50-something women needed a book like this one! All my friends are in menopause, and they feel just awful. They are in a fog. They need to know their lifestyle does not need to continue to deteriorate in a steamy jungle of night sweats and hot flashes. Other books about menopause seem either transparently commercial, completely dry and boring, or worse, sounding like they were written by either Dr. Pee Wee Herman or the 'Valley Girl' herself 90210. Not this one. In contrast, reading this book was an incredibly informative and entertaining learning experience. Many thanks Linda and Dr. Boland for making it simple. I'm ordering these books as my XMAS gifts early for all my friends, including my own doctor. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Menopause just the facts Ma'am is a truly informative read for all menopausal women before, during, and after. It is well written and easy to understand why women feel the way we do, out of control when the monthly storm hits. This book is also very important for our men, lovers, boyfriends to read, so they can have better understanding when the bed springs go down, and the hand goes on our breasts, legs go over our thighs and the man we love whisper sweet nothings in our ears, because their toggle switch is never in the off position and they want to make love !!!! Ladies take note, sometimes its better to just fulfill their fantasy and much needed desires so we can get a good night sleep. Men, well since your switch is always on, Drive it like a Dodge Viper and make it quick. Doctor Neil Boland and Linda LaVelle, Thank You for an excellant and enlightened read. So the next time we want to say Not tonight Darling we can say Did you read Menopause Just the Facts Ma'am.!Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. This is a must read for all women who are approaching or are currently in menopause. Co-authored by a licensed, practicing OB/GYN and a salon/spa owner, who shares her menopausal experiences with a sense of humor and downright honesty, this easy to understand book seperates fact from fiction. And it offers treatment options that many women don't even know exist. In addition, the book addresses nutritional therapy, diet, exercise, skin care, and for those beautiful people--facelifts and chemical peels--to minimize the impact Menopause can have on our lives. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Study released in 2002, turned the world of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) upside-down. I was one of those millions of women who tossed my HRT medication down the toilet. After reading this book, learning more about the WHI Study results, and finding out there are lots of options out there to minimize hot flashes and sleepless nights, I'm going back to my physician and discussing the prospect of resuming HRT and/or other treatments that will help me regain my quality of life. Thank you Dr. Boland and Linda for writing this book! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
