The history of the menorah, the branched candlestick sacred to the Jewish people, is traced in this book from its creation in Biblical times to the present. In briefly worded passages that accompany full page vibrantly colored illustrations, Mr. Podwall tells of the first menorah and how it created itself; the menorahs that had to be hidden to avoid confiscation; and the miraculous menorah that burned for 8 days on oil enough for only one day. The story is short and elegant. The illustrations, rendered mostly in yellows and oranges, glow as if they were lit from within. It's a loving tribute to an ever-changing symbol of Judaism and miracles.
