Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This book's goal is not only to "turn a piece of your humble abode into your personal war room," but also to demystify the art of weight training: "Where it really counts-results-there's zero difference between a home gym and a membership gym." Sharply written by Men's Health fitness director Schuler, this volume contains all an average man needs to know to get his body in shape: expert, no-nonsense, to-the-point chapters on muscle groups, with descriptions that readers will actually remember; how to buy effective equipment without going bankrupt; and the correct way to lift (all those big guys in the gym are doing it wrong). But the heart of the book is located in the more than 200 pages of exercise programs designed by Mejia (all expertly photographed and illustrated), an incredible range of simple and effective routines. To further help the reader along, Mejia provides 4-week workouts for body weight, dumbbells, barbells, and cables, for work at home, as well as 4-week all-equipment and multistation workouts that can be done at home. This newest in the Men's Health series provides a range of solid, useful and entertaining information on a range of men's issues. Any man interested in learning the most effective way to develop a successful weight-training routine that he can do at home should buy and read it daily for inspiration. (Nov.)

Introduction

Welcome home.

We're glad you're ready to turn a piece of your humble abode into your personal war room. You're primed to use home exercise equipment to get your body into the shape it deserves to be in. You're not asking for much--just an awesome physique, better health, increased self-confidence, greater strength, and a longer life.

In the pages ahead, you're going to get all of that--and then some.

We assume you're not in the habit of doing things half-assed. Good. Rest assured that the information we're going to give you will be fully assed. In fact, the reason this book is more than 400 pages long is because a top-quality, beginner-friendly, long-haul home-workout program takes some time and space to explain. We're giving it 100,000 words and several hundred pictures. That doesn't cover everything, but it sure gets to most of it.

Exercise is as simple or complicated as you want to make it. It's easy (in theory) to walk for a few minutes or do some pushups or jog or stretch. When you attach performance goals to those exercises, things start getting tricky. Adding muscle, shedding fat, building strength, or improving your

ability to run or jump or play a specific sport--those goals require the right exercises, the right techniques, and the right mix of hard work and recovery.

We've got all that, and more.

How to Use This Book

We hope everyone who buys this book will eventually read every chapter. But we know many of you will go straight to the exercise sections and dive in. We anticipated this, because we're the same way. Our houses and garages are filled with appliances, tools, and vehicles for which we still haven't read the owner's manuals.

That's why we made the book as modular as possible. The exercise chapters are arranged according to the equipment a guy is likely to have in his home. We start with the no-equipment chapter (chapter 6, which strongly encourages you to add a chinning bar and Swiss ball to your minimalist setup), then progress to chapters on dumbbells, barbells, cable machines, and, finally, multistation home gyms. Chapter 11 shows you several routines you can do if you have all the equipment mentioned in chapters 6 through 10.

Each chapter is itself divided by muscle groups, so all the dumbbell arm exercises are in one place, all the barbell chest exercises are together, and so on. We recommend how many exercises to choose from each group, and how many sets and repetitions to do.

For the most knowledgeable and self-motivated among you, that's probably enough. But in case you don't have much experience putting together workout routines, we've taken the extra step and put some together for you.

Starting on page 357, you'll find sample routines for three skill levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), with six equipment options (no equipment except a chinning bar and something that can be used as a bench; dumbbells; barbell; cable; multistation; and all equipment). If you have more than one type of equipment, we've made it easy to mix and match.

If you have any questions that the book doesn't address, go to www.menshealth.com and ask it on one of our fitness message boards. This book's authors, as well as other experienced trainers and knowledgeable readers, will be happy to help you find the answer.

    I Also Recommend:

    Home is where it's at!

If you want to work out at home but aren't quite sure where to start, then this is a book that will definitely get you headed in the right direction.

Readers should also consider this book if you: 1) have exercise equipment and want to get better results, or 2) plan to buy exercise equipment for your home.

In a nutshell, the book starts out giving you basic muscle anatomy and then jumps right into pictures of dozens and dozens of exercises that can be done with all kinds of stuff in your home AS WELL AS dumbell, barbells, and other equipment you can purchase and use with in your home. The book ends nicely with miscellaneous advice on things such as the best workout videos, training logs, and advice on personal trainers.

A great book all in all, it will provide the reader with a wealth of info- and since the book is almost 2 inches thick, you can always use it to lift up and down for exercise! Also recommend "The Sixty-Second Motivator" for home exercisers who need help getting and staying motivated to exercise. Happy training!

    Buy This Book!!!

I just got this book in the mail. It has not to be one of the best books I have read in a long time. It covers everything you will ever need. There are workouts in hear that make you think. WOW! Why did I not think of that. Stop reading all the reviews out there and just buy this book. Trust me. It has pictures showing you how to do each workout, it evin shows you other household items that you can use to improve you home workout. If you are currentley going to the gym. You and I both know that you are at least paying $30/mo. In just 4 mo. you could have saved that money on a weight-set and a basic bench. With that and this book. You will never have to go to the gym for a full workout again. The only problem I had with this book is the fact that it did not tell you the verry muscle each workout worked. It just gave you the larger muscle groups that were being worked. And I sish it would have coverd more on cardio workouts. Not that it is not there... Just that it is not coverd alot. So quit reading and get this book. I think I may be buying a second copy just for safe keeping. They need to make a workout poster out of this book. WOW!!! ;)

    Ultimate Weightlifter's Reference book

This book contains a wealth of information on weightlifting and other workout methods regardless of your fitness level. It does a great job of explaining the benefits of lifting, the pros and cons of various methods (barbells, dumbbells, machines, etc.), and how to get the most efficient workout. It also has information for getting a good workout without any equipment at all. I especially liked the straightforward approach the book takes when describing the various aspects of working out. I also like the detailed workout section that is broken down into muscle group and fitness level. It also has sample workout programs which you can use as-is or as a foundation for your own program. The best part is that, with the information given in this book and commitment on your part, you can devise a workout program to take you from whatever level you are currently at to whatever level you want to achieve. You can scale your workout program to any level.
