If You Want to Know How This is Your First Sudoku Book to Buy

I wish this book had been available when my wife and I began solving Sudoku puzzles. We would have been saved a lot of frustrated evenings trying to solve even the simplest puzzles. After reading through and trying to learn the solving techniques presented (not very clearly) in many other books we were almost ready to throw in the towel (I mean the pencil). But then along came this book and what a relief. It presents the techniques in a very clear format. It takes you by the hand and gently leads you through the understanding of how to solve the more difficult puzzles. If we were starting over and had our choice of any sudoku book to purchase this is the one. You will not go wrong making this choice. Caution -- do NOT loan this book to your friends -- you will NOT get it back. Make them get their own. Keep yours under lock and key. Enjoy!

Best ever book on solving Sudoku

Peter gordon gives some exceellent techniques for solving the unsolvable soduko puzzles. The only book I have read that has helped me to solve every puzzle I have attempted and before that I could solve some really hard ones but Peter has helped me to become an expert. Every serious player should buy this great book. There are 800!! puzzles in there as well,

    Extending Logic in Sudoku

This is a hard book to put down no matter what your level of sudoku puzzle solving. Gorden takes you through the basic levels right up through the x-wing, Gordonian logic, XY and XYZ-wing and beyond, explaining each step with examples and puzzles in each chapter. I had always thought these advanced levels involved some sort of math or guessing but I was wrong, it is pure logic. The explanations are much more than recognizing patterns but how to think so that the techniques can be more easily picked up and remembered. I have noticed that some puzzles are just more fun to solve, and the puzzles used in this book are the best I have found anywhere. I was concerned about the small size used to get 800 puzzles in one fairly small book. But the higher quality of the paper in the book allows the use of a sharp pencil and I have had no difficulty at all.

This book got me hooked to Sudoku

I bought this book two months ago. I could not finish one Sudoku before I read this book. I bought this book the night before my Winter vacation, as I want to kill some time on my coast to coast flight. After I read the first three chartpers of the book on my flight, I finished an easy level sudoku in the magaine in front of my flight seat. It was the first time I solved a sudoku completely. Now I have finished reading 9 of 11 chartpers of the book, I am doing Sudoku on San Diego Union Tribune almost everyday. From Monday to Wednesday, I can solve 1 ~ 3 atars sudoku on newspaper in 15 minutes or less. Thursday to Saturday, there are 4 ~ 6 stars sudoku on newspaper, it can take me as much as an hour to finish (if I can find the time). Yesterday (Saturday), I spent about an hour to finished a 6 stars sudoku with my 5 years old kids on my lap help me fill in number and answering his questions. Now my kids are also hooked on Sudoku, it gives them some brain exercise and also helps to get them out of bed in the morning. I highly recommend this book.

    A Real Help

This book is a real helper for beginners and advanced puzzle solvers. It has taken me from beginner to 4 star Sudoku puzzle solver. I could not have reached this level without the book.

    Moving into unknown territory

This book has been very helpful in solving puzzles. I only wish that commenting on an illustration on another page is not helpful to me with ADD. I have copies made of all puzzles. After completing a chapter I go back to all the previous chapters to see if there is a better way of solving the puzzle. I'm still learning.

    Good in theory...

The theories are solid. But without practicing how to identify when one has stumbled upon one of the scenarios, it is difficult to know when to apply each technique in practice. I would rather give up several pages of blank puzzles for the ability to practice looking at half-finished puzzles to identify a swordfish or an xy-wing. I was sudoku-ing Will Shortz's 4-star puzzles on a daily basis and soon finished the book. 'Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku' effectively help me break my sudoku habit.
