Puzzles come in all varieties: Fun, silly, tricky, and simply incorrect.

I was given the MENSA Mighty Logic Puzzles book for Christmas, and while I have enjoyed it, I feel that I should point out to potential consumers that quite a few of the puzzles in here are either completely silly or completely wrong. And no, I'm not saying this out of spite after being unable to solve them. The answers given in the back of the book for some of these puzzles is genuinely incorrect. Even many of the solvable ones were worded poorly, so that you could only solve them by imagining that the puzzle had been worded in a different way. I'll give one example, of a puzzle that essentially goes like this:

There are three types of people, one type that tells only lies, one type that tells only the truth, and one type that may tell either the truth or a lie, and they form three groups. One group consists all of one type, another group consists of two types, and the third group consists of all three types. The people in one group all say, "We are all honest." The people in another say, "We are all liars." The people in the last group all say, "We are those that may either lie or tell the truth." What type of people are in each group?

The problem with this puzzle is that the wording makes it illogical. To solve it, you have to ignore the way the puzzle is worded and pretend that it says, "... the last group says, "I am one of those who may either lie or tell the truth."

Otherwise, the puzzle is an impossibility. This might sound pedantic, but it's essential to say things clearly in a word problem.

Others had multiple possible solutions, some had no real solution at all, and some of them were just so open ended that they were not really puzzles at all but stories with a twist ending.

On the whole I did enjoy these puzzles, but not knowing whether or not the puzzle you're trying to solve is actually solvable seriously detracts from the experience.
