Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Trivia isn't any fun if it isn't funny or surprising. Mental Floss' 200 "greatest lists in the history of listory" manage to be amusing, revelatory, and, forgive us for saying, also educational. This publication nominally honors the 10th anniversary of the mental_floss magazine, but it's actually too entertaining to require any occasion. Addictive recreational reading.

Library Journal
Trex (contributor, ESPN Guide to Psycho Fan Behavior) and Will Pearson and Mangesh Hattikudur (coauthors, with Erik Sass, The Mental Floss History of the United States) compile entries from ten years of mental_floss, a popular magazine that's recognized for its unconventional, data-packed lists. The book, whose introduction emphasizes that its focus "is not to offend but to have fun without being political or mean spirited," is easily digestible, providing engrossing tidbits to add spice to dull conversations or perk up boring cocktail parties. It is divided into several sections from "Lighten the Mood at the E.R." to "Lists for People Who Can't Write Good," with subtopics such as "Eight Latin Phrases You Pretend To Understand." Readers will learn, for example, that Play-Doh was initially sold as a wallpaper cleaner, and that Twinkies originally had banana-flavored filling but switched to vanilla when World War II brought the banana trade to a halt. BOTTOM LINE With its wealth of stories and illustrations, simple layout, and low cost, this quick-witted title will appeal to patrons of a broad range of ages and interests. Recommended for students, casual readers, and knowledge nerds of all types.—Bobbie Wrinkle, McCracken Cty. P.L., Paducah, KY

    Great Book!

I'm a huge fan of Mental_Floss magazine and I'm a huge fan of lists. If there is a top ten list anywhere I want to read it. Mental_Floss has put together this fabulous book that is the mother load of lists. If you're not familiar with Mental_Floss their tag line is "Where knowledge junkies get their fix". The magazine is chocked full of interesting tidbits from music to science to history and more. I had high expectations for this book. I was not disappointed.
    This book contains lists of:
The Five Most Annoying People in History
14 Fictional Characters Whose Names You Didn't Know
Eight Latin Phrases You Pretend to Understand
Eight Celebs and their Incredibly Odd Phobias
Six Tasty Foods Named After People
There are hundreds of lists in this book. I love looking through this book. The lists are great to read. This would make a great coffee table book. You can read it cover to cover one list at a time or you can just flip through it every now and again. The History of Listory is a great read. It's very entertaining and fun. If you love lists or know someone that does. I'd definitely recommend this book.

    Essential for trivia nuts

I love everything Mental Floss touches, so I'm a bit biased. But, if you want an introduction to their brilliance, this would be the place to start. This book is full of dazzling facts, pretty much all of them gems. If you like lists and you like history, then you just need to own this.

    PONDEROUS

Really enjoy having this on my NT. I loved being able to get into it just as I would with the mental_floss mag. (Which needs to be available on nook!!)

Perfect for when you have a few minutes to ponder randomly or when you've been blessed with an hour or two of freedom. Comes highly suggested.

    Recommended reading for TRIVIA buffs.

Very informative book of useless information. Would do well for someone on Jeopardy as a contestant.

    Best holiday gift!

I bought 3 of these in December -- one for myself and one each for my sons. After we had finished opening myriad presents, I looked over and both sons were reading their books, while their wives were trying in vain to get their attention.

What Do You Want To Know Today?

What do you want to know today? How about ¿Six Works of Literature That Were Really Hard to Write?¿ or ¿Moons of the non-Gluteal Variety¿. This book can tell you all that and so much more! In a really funny compilation of various subjects the folks at Mental_Floss tell us of things odd and odder but all interesting.
The introduction in itself is worth a chuckle or two and the following chapters make this a great gift for anyone on your Christmas list you haven¿t shopped for yet. After all, where else can you find out about Bumpy, Hickey, Chesty and Seven Other Rejected Dwarf Names? If not for someone else, treat yourself, you¿ll enjoy it thoroughly.
