Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, DO, MA (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a new and timely book covering how the new digital communicative technologies affect mental health clinicians in their daily practice. Written and edited by a group of clinicians - users of technology in mental health clinical practice — this book is a valuable contribution to the field
Purpose: The purpose of the book, according to the editors, is "to systematically describe how to expand the reach and quality of mental health services by integrating technology into everyday practice, and (to) use case examples for demonstration." Further, their goal is to present "the nuts and bolts of how and when to consider using the new, rapidly proliferating specialized technologies for behavioral and mental health." Indeed, this is a comprehensive guide to learning more about this obligatory technology.
Audience: The intended audiences are mental health clinicians, including psychologists and psychiatrists.
Features: The book features 539 pages divided into 15 chapters. Also included are 4 appendices. The chapter topics include telecommunication technologies, text-based communications, web-sites, telephonic and videoconferencing technologies, computer-aided assessment, computer-aided psychotherapy, electronic practice management and electronic patient records, legal and regulatory issues, standards and guidelines, training and support issues regarding online clinical practice management, referrals and client education and consent with online clinical practice management and the near and distant future of these technologies. The reference section is at the back of the book. The appendices contain useful information on comparative studies of psychotechnologies; sample listserv guidelines; addendum to patient consent agreement; and a draft of the international convention on telemedicine and telehealth. There are also helpful subject and author indices.
Assessment: This is an excellent new book on this emerging technology. All clinicians will eventually need to learn the material presented in this very interesting book.
