Overview

With his world of Kodomir overrun by brutal conquerors, Stevar Polrany makes a desperate escape to find allies who can help. But in the 29th Century, the Settled Worlds have plunged into war and few care about the fate of a backwater farming world. Against his own best judgment, he finds that all he can do is hire a small mercenary unit called the Wild Geese. As the Kodomiri form an underground, interstellar maneuvers try to make Kodomir into a pawn on a board measured in light years. Igniting the fuse of rebellion, Polrany faces a terrible choice: use the mercenaries one last time to free a thousand Kodomiri held as slaves on a desolate, frozen mining world or use them to strike at his enemy and aid the rebellion.

Mercenary's Heart, the first of the Wild Geese novels, explores the issues of why humans fight, what loyalty means, and the true heart of courage by following professional soldiers, mercenaries, politicians, and ordinary people as they confront choices of life and death. Steven Silver served as a Marine in combat and as an Army psychologist - in writing Mercenary's Heart, he drew on those experiences as well as his work as a psychologist and historian to give the reader a realistic view of war and its consequences, from the cockpits of human brain-driven war machines to the cells of interrogators to politicians to farmers.

Meet the Author

Steven M. Silver, Ph.D., is a writer, poet, historian, and psychologist. A veteran of both the Marine Corps and the Army, he has worked with combat veterans and their families since 1972 and for 26 years was the director of an inpatient PTSD Program for combat veterans. Co-author, with Dr. Susan Rogers, of “Light in the heart of darkness: EMDR and the treatment of war and terrorism survivors” (Norton, 2002), he has over 50 professional publications to his credit in the fields of history, terrorism, and psychotherapy.

In 1957, at the age of 13, he was introduced to science fiction by a helpful librarian at the Willoughby, Ohio, Euclid Avenue public library and read every SF book they had at the time - he was hooked. In most of his fiction and poetry there is a strong influence from his experience as a historian, which included his first two professional publications and time spent going through the National Archives for the Historical Division of the U.S. Marine Corps looking for photographs of old aircraft.
