Just a great medical reference book that has been around forever- however its probably more for medical professionals though than the lay person as the language can get a bit complicated- check out the home version if you're non-medical. Also recommended for healthcare workers, The Sixty-Second Motivator to learn how to better motivate patients to exercise, take their meds, eat better, etc.

As a retired Adult Nurse Practitioner this book was my quick reference to medical conditions I needed to review and to help make determinations on diagnosis and treatment modalities. Recently our neighbor's daughter received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree and will be working in as Emergency Room physician. This is her graduation gift that I felt would enhance her position as an ER doctor, by having her OWN copy for reference. It was received with much appreciation.

The Merck is a wonderful medical reference book for those with a good understanding of medical concepts and terminology. As medical information changes it is necessary to update your fundamental reference books from time to time. I have worked as an EMT, Paramedic and Instructor for 35 years. The Merck is the first one I reach for when I have questions about some medical condition, symptom or complication.

This is a one-of-a-kind, general reference medical book that is both extremely thorough and very well written. It's actually quite a pleasure to read for anyone curious about medicine and the workings of human body and mind. The section on psychiatric disorders and their treatment, my area of interest, covers about 100 pages, and seems accurate and authoritative. Some aspects of that section may be a touch antiquated, but that doesn't necessarily detract from the book. Overall, an authoritative reference that is readily accessible to the lay person.
