Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sally Ling, M.D.;FACP(University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine)
Description: This popular medical book covers all standard subspecialty and general medicine areas with up-to-date and succinctly written chapters. The 8½ x 5 inch desk top book is loaded with useful information.
Purpose: This is intended to be a complete resource that is as up-to-date as a print publication can be. Updated information is available free of charge on the Merck Manual website. There will always be a place for a book of this nature. The authors met their objectives.
Audience: The book is for healthcare practitioners interested in reading up on selected topics, or in rapidly accessing information to use at the bedside or office.
Features: Chapters cover systems or disciplines including nutritional disorders, critical care medicine, and clinical pharmacology to name a few. The topics are addressed by pathophysiology, etiology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention.
Assessment: This book is a treasure that will be used again and again. The authors have presented the information very effectively. It is an enjoyable read.
Library Journal
This reference for diagnosing and treating medical and psychological disorders has been a standard for more than a century. In the present revised and updated edition, to which 300-plus medical doctors have contributed content reflecting the latest research and reports of clinical experience, 34 new chapters cover critical-care medicine, biological warfare, terrorism, SARS, and bird flu. Two color diagrams and appendixes showing the metric system, centigrade-to-Fahrenheit equivalences, and the trade names of commonly used drugs have also been added. Some information, such as injuries and the medical aspects of travel, has been rearranged in chapters on "special subjects" rather than being dispersed throughout the text. Between three and five thematically organized pages are devoted to each of the entries. According to the Merck web site (www.Merck.com), an online version of this edition will be posted in August, with users able to request email updates. Bottom Line The Professional Guide to Diseases (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005. 8th ed.) also covers diseases and conditions, but this information quickly becomes outdated. The Manual, made handier by the thumb tabs, is essential for academic and health libraries.-Margaret K. Norden, Marymount Univ., Arlington, VA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    I Also Recommend:

DX: Very satisfied with the book.

Just a great medical reference book that has been around forever- however its probably more for medical professionals though than the lay person as the language can get a bit complicated- check out the home version if you're non-medical. Also recommended for healthcare workers, The Sixty-Second Motivator to learn how to better motivate patients to exercise, take their meds, eat better, etc.

    Merck Manual Bible

As a retired Adult Nurse Practitioner this book was my quick reference to medical conditions I needed to review and to help make determinations on diagnosis and treatment modalities. Recently our neighbor's daughter received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree and will be working in as Emergency Room physician. This is her graduation gift that I felt would enhance her position as an ER doctor, by having her OWN copy for reference. It was received with much appreciation.

    Helpful medical reference book

The Merck is a wonderful medical reference book for those with a good understanding of medical concepts and terminology. As medical information changes it is necessary to update your fundamental reference books from time to time. I have worked as an EMT, Paramedic and Instructor for 35 years. The Merck is the first one I reach for when I have questions about some medical condition, symptom or complication.

    A reviewer

This is a one-of-a-kind, general reference medical book that is both extremely thorough and very well written. It's actually quite a pleasure to read for anyone curious about medicine and the workings of human body and mind. The section on psychiatric disorders and their treatment, my area of interest, covers about 100 pages, and seems accurate and authoritative. Some aspects of that section may be a touch antiquated, but that doesn't necessarily detract from the book. Overall, an authoritative reference that is readily accessible to the lay person.
