Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
At last, a consumer version of the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, a.k.a., the Merck Manual, the most widely used medical textbook in the world. With a few exceptions and some additions, this home edition contains nearly all the information found in the Merck Manual but written for the lay reader. The layout is accessible, with the book divided into sections organized around either organ systems or medical specialties. Each section begins with an outline detailing the contents of following chapters. Extras include sections on men's, women's and children's health. Cross references throughout the text are extremely helpful, and the line drawings are clear and understandable. Appendixes include information on legal issues, tables of weights and measures, common medical tests, trade names of generic drugs, and a resource listing of organizations providing information and support. Overall, this home edition compares favorably with similar resources such as the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book (Morrow, 1996. 2d ed.), avoiding a big, splashy presentation to focus on content. Essential for all medical, consumer health, and public libraries.

Preface

The Merck Manual of Medical Information — Home Edition has been published to meet a growing demand by the general public for highly detailed, sophisticated medical information. This book is based almost entirely on the text of The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, commonly referred to as The Merck Manual.

First published in 1899, The Merck Manual is the oldest continuously published general medical textbook in the English language and the most widely used medical textbook in the world. It covers almost every disease that affects humans in specialties such as pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dermatology, and dentistry, and special situations such as burns, heat disorders, radiation reactions and injuries, and sports injuries. No other medical textbook covers as wide a range of disorders. Many fine books have been published during the last two decades to help meet the needs of the public for medical information. At the same time, more and more laypersons have been buying The Merck Manual for personal use, even though it is not advertised to the general public, and many find the book difficult to understand. We concluded that people who have a serious desire to understand medical issues want access to the same information that doctors have. This led us to translate The Merck Manual into language the general public can understand.

The Merck Manual — Home Edition contains nearly all the information in The Merck Manual. Some information, such as descriptions of heart murmurs and the appearance of diseased tissue under a microscope, hasn't been retained because lay readers aren't likely to listen to heart murmurs or examine such tissue specimens. Some details of drug treatments have also been deleted, because drug selection and dosing instructions vary far too much among specific situations to provide such information reliably. However, a great deal of treatment information is given in relation to each disease discussed, and a chapter on over-the-counter drugs has been added to the Drugs section.

Overviews of anatomy and physiology have been added to each section to help orient readers to the structure and function of specific organs. In-depth information about diseases, their causes, their recognition, and their treatment has been retained, and the harsh realities pertaining to incurable diseases and the risks of therapy have not been softened. The text acknowledges the actualities of what disease can do and what modern medicine can accomplish.

The strength of this book lies in the knowledge, experience, and judgment of its outstanding authors, consultants, and editorial board members. Their names are listed on the pages that follow the table of contents. They deserve a degree of thanks that cannot be adequately expressed here, but we know they will feel sufficiently rewarded if their efforts serve the reader's needs. Like The Merck Manual, this book is published by Merck Research Laboratories, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., on a not-for-profit basis.

The format and sequence of this book have some unique characteristics. Readers are urged to spend a few minutes reviewing the Guide for Readers (page xxiii), the Table of Contents, and the Index. An examination of the chapters in each section, headings in each chapter, and terms in boldface type will reveal a pattern of outlining intended to help readers locate information quickly and easily. Cross-references help direct readers to additional related information.

No book can replace the expertise and advice of health care practitioners who have direct contact with a patient. The Merck Manual — Home Edition is not intended to do so, nor is it meant to be a self-help book. Rather, we hope the medical information it provides will help readers communicate more effectively with their health care practitioners and, as a result, understand more completely their situations and choices. Suggestions for improvements will be warmly welcomed and carefully considered.
